Temperatures in the UK are set to soar this summer, with Brits likely to see the hottest temperatures of the year So to help you get through some of the hottest days of the year so far, here are a few handy tips to help you cope, both at home and on your commute.

Prolonged periods of high temperatures and high humidity can be very dangerous for your health. In extreme heat and humidity, evaporation is slowed and your body has to work very hard to maintain a normal temperature. The risks vary depending on your age and health, but by knowing how to prepare for a heat wave and what to do when one occurs, you can avoid the biggest health dangers, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Avoid the Central line

Any Londoner who’s spent a summer commuting at rush hour in the city will know the Central line can feel balmy even in the depths of winter. Avoiding the hottest tube lines might work if you have a private helicopter or a crash pad on the Metropolitan line but tough luck if you live on the Central line which can hit 32 degrees. Get a fan and refer to TfL’s advice about water. Leave earlier in the mornings and take an alternate route that favours the overground lines: the air conditioned Circle line will feel like a nirvana compared to the inferno temperatures elsewhere on the network.

Take Advantage of a Beer gardens

If you leave the office dripping with sweat and can’t quite face squashing onto a train home just yet, wait it out at one of London’s bountiful beer gardens. It’s often standing room only on the hottest days, but once that cold pint’s in your hand, that won’t matter.

Carry a bottle of water

Drink water, and lots of it.  Think you’ve had enough, drink some more.  Dehydration is the first thing that will strike you down on a dessert island, and the same applies to a city like London.  As you sweat, you are losing liquid from your body, meaning you need to take on more to stay hydrated. Those constant reminders on the Underground may be irritating after the first fifty times, but you’ll be thankful you heeded Sadiq’s advice when you’re parched between stations at a red signal.

Be Prepared

Deodorant is your friend. Trust us, your fellow commuters and your colleagues will thank you for applying it liberally. The opposite is true for perfume and aftershave — no-one enjoys being enveloped in a miasma of J-Lo.

Wear the Correct Clothing

Jeans, lycra and polyester on a 30°C heatwave is simply a silly choice.  Aim for loose fitting clothing of a lighter colour.  Natural fibres are cooler so look for cotton or linen.  These natural fibres absorb moisture, dry quickly and allow everything to breathe.  These generally crease the most, so if you have a VIP meeting, your safari linen trousers probably aren’t ideal but at least you’ll be cooler than the guy in the black suit!

Ditch the coffee and the booze

Tea and coffee are dehydrating, the same is true of alcohol – so don’t think a cool beer at the local pub will be your antidote after you clock off for the day. Keep yourself hydrated with water – you should be aiming for over the recommended 2 litres per day in hot weather. But if you really can’t live without your morning caffeine fix, opt for an iced latte instead.

Protect your phone

Smartphones and heat don’t mix well – who hasn’t experienced the irritation of the “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it” warning? Avoid keeping your phone in your pocket – when body heat can be a contributing factor – or on surfaces with direct sun exposure.

Shade is what you need

Seriously, being in the shade makes all the difference. So, when it gets too hot, go to the very shaded part of the park or better yet take a woods or forest country walk. I know most people want to hit the beach when it’s hot (including me), but going to places like Epping Forest or Ashridge Estate is actually a good idea to stay cool. It might help to wear a sun hat or carry an umbrella to create your own little shade.

Looking for a sunny getaway, but can’t afford the flight? Here is a list of the best beaches in and around London for all your summer needs!

1. Ruislip Lido Beach, West London

Ruislip Lido is a 60-acre lake sat on the edge of a lovely 726-acre nature reserve – that’s twice the size of Hyde Park, stats fans. Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve is, as you might guess, mostly bucolic ancient woodland.. Nearest stations: Ruislip and Northwood Hills, Zone 6 – it’s then a 20-minute walk.

2. Frensham Beach, Surrey

Frensham Great Pond, south of Farnham and, if traffic is kind, you can be there from much of west London in less than an hour.

Its beautiful sandy beach, formed by the sandy soil of Frensham Common, draws day trippers who flock there when the weather warms up.

It has two swimming areas in its lake, marked by white buoys, with a maximum depth of 1.4 metres in one and 1.2 metres in the other.

there’s also a brilliant and bizarre sculpture park with 600 statues to explore within walking distance.

3. Whitstable, Kent

Whitstable is a seaside town on the north coast of Kent in south-east England, 5 miles north of Canterbury and 2 miles west of Herne Bay Top it off with fresh seafood, and you’ve got a picture perfect day out.

Approximately 1.5 hours from London (train from St Pancras/Cannon Street/Victoria to Whitstable).

4. Brighton, Sussex

Vast, pebbled Brighton Beach, where locals, holidaymakers, and day trippers swim, sunbathe, and picnic, has a promenade lined with beach huts and lively eateries.

Approximately an hour from London (train from London Bridge/Victoria to Brighton).

5. Climping Beach, West Sussex

Beaches
Photo: @thebarnshripney

Sometimes all you crave is a bit of space and the simple sounds of the ocean. Climping Beach is quieter than its neighbours of Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, which makes it the ideal spot to clear your mind and enjoy quality time with the family.

Appromixately 2 hours from London (train from Victoria to Littlehampton).

6. Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex

Wander along the second longest pier in England, climb the Naze Tower, or hire one of their luridly colourful beach huts. In a seaside town brimming with history, a day out here is the perfect chance to make some memories.

Approximately 1.5 hours from London (train from Liverpool Street to Walton-on-the-Naze).

7. Sunny Sands, Kent

Sunny Sands Beach is a hugely popular sandy beach at the eastern end of the Stade and Folkestone Harbour. It is a firm favourite with families throughout the summer, with good facilities nearby including toilets and cafés, pubs and beach shops.

Approximately 1 hour from London (train from St Pancras to Folkestone Central).

8. Bournemouth, Dorset

As beaches go, you won’t find bigger than this one. Bournemouth Beach is a whopping eleven miles long, so it’s easy enough to escape the crowds here. Amongst golden sands of spots like Sandbanks, you’ll also find shops, gardens, hotels, and restaurants.

Approximately 2 hours from London (train direct from Waterloo to Bournemouth).

9. West Wittering Beach, West Sussex

Offering wonderful views of Chichester Harbour and the South Downs beyond, the natural and unspoilt sandy beach of West Wittering has been a favourite destination for a family day out for generations.  The highest water quality and excellent facilities have made it one of the premier Blue Flag beaches in the country. The extensive acres of neatly mown grass close to the beach are perfect for parking, and picnics.  The sea is popular with wind and kite surfers, while shallow lagoons are left on extensive sandy flats at low tide. The whole area is internationally recognised for its wildlife, birds and unique beauty.

Approximately 1.5 hours from London (train from Victoria to Chichester).

10. Botany Bay, Kent

When the tide is out, Botany bay is a great location for fossil hunting and exploring rock pools. There is plenty of exposed sand to enjoy when the tide is in, but due to the bay’s shape the ends are cut off at high tide.

Approximately 2 hours from London (train from St Pancras/Cannon Street to Margate).

11. Mersea Island, Essex

You’ll need to plan carefully to reach this one. Mersea Island is an island in Essex, England, in the Blackwater and Colne estuaries to the south-east of Colchester. Its name comes from the Old English word meresig, meaning “island of the pool”

Approximately 1 hour from London (train from Liverpool Street to Colchester).

12. Camber Sands, East SussexBeaches

Approximately 1 hour from London (train from St Pancras to Rye).Camber Sands is a little unusual for a Sussex beach and the reason is in the name. Yes, sands! Unlike most beaches along the Sussex coast which are lined with pebbles and shingle held in place by a series of groynes, Camber Sands is covered in fine, golden sand. Not only that but Camber is home to the only sand dunes in East Sussex.

13. Dungeness, Kent

A stone’s throw away from Camber Sands, you’ll find this place. The largest expanse of shingle in Europe, Dungeness is a headland on the coast of Kent, England, formed largely of a shingle beach in the form of a cuspate foreland. It shelters a large area of low-lying land, Romney Marsh.  Elegantly eerie.

Approximately 1 hour from London (train from St Pancras to Rye).

14. Minnis Bay, Kent

Minnis Bay is a safe and secluded sandy bay with separate areas for swimming and watersports. Plenty of facilities, including a well-equipped children’s area. Coastal cycle and walking routes are clearly marked at the entrance to the beach. Popular for windsurfing and kite surfing. Served by an open-top bus in summer.

Approximately 1.5 hours from London (train from St Pancras/Cannon Street/Victoria to Birchington-on-Sea).

15. Eastbourne, East Sussex

Escape to the English countryside and explore Beachy Head in East Sussex. A favoured Victorian seaside retreat, you’ll find a historic pier,  sea front hotels, and a rather charming beach. It’s also not far from the utterly enchanting Beachy Head, which is as impressive a view as you’ll get on the south coast.

Approximately 1.5 hours from London (train from London Bridge/Victoria to Eastbourne).

1. South West Four (August 24-25)

Two days of move-inducing electronic euphoria hits Clapham Common at the end of August. Look out for Martin Garrix, Craig David, Sigala, Disciples, Pendulum, Andy C, Chase & Status DJ, Wiley, Noisia and Skepsis plus many more. Grab your tickets here.

2. Elrow Town (August 17)

Elrow Town London sees the popular Barcelona party brand return to the capital, as over 25,000 dance music fans descend on London’s Trent Park this August for the UK’s biggest ever elrow show to date

3. Standon Calling (July 25-28)

Music Festivals

Hop on a short train to the charming town of Standon, where the likes of Wolf Alice, Rag’N’Bone Man, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Echo & The Bunnymen, and Kate Nash will be waiting for you. Also featuring live comedy, a costume parade, hot tubs, and what’s billed as “a legendary dog show”, it’s one we’re rather excited for. Standon Calling to the faraway towns… Tickets available here.

4. Art’s House (August 10)

Last year, manuscript DJ Artwork took his Art’s House party – which began in his own home, a good few years ago – to the next level by making a whole darn one-day festival out of it. For this one-dayer, Artwork is joined by just one guest, with DJ Harvey returning to man the decks. Both will be playing all day on this fab little slice of (relative) London isolation, plus there’s street food, good booze and various entertainments galore.  Returning in 2019 to the same, oasis-like venue between Bow and Stratford, Art’s House smartly bucks the festival trend of simply heaving name DJs on to a bill.

5. One Day at the Disco Festival (August 24)

One Day At The Disco brings together house, disco and electro legends, OGs and some of the most exciting new talent of our time, for a day of rare cuts and soaring disco anthems on Three Mills Island.
Transforming the island into one giant dance floor, the beautiful sun trap along with it’s industrial backdrop is set to come alive with beats, city life, exotic cocktails and delicious street food.

6. 80s In The Park (August 26)

The era of Madonna, Blondie, and a whole host of other things from the Bowling For Soup song, the 80s were a glorious time for music. Come celebrate it at this short but sweet one-day festival, where outlandish throwback costumes aren’t just welcomed, they’re encouraged. (Given that it’s in August, you may want to skip the legwarmers.) Tickets can be found here.

7. ABODE in the Park (September 22)

Bringing up the rear of London’s music festivals –deep house ABODE in the Park brinhgs up the rear for summer fests. Although it will basically be autumn by the time it arrives, twenty-five of London’s top DJs will party all day long in Finsbury Park, keeping those summer vibes in session for one last blowout. Grab your tickets here.

8. Community Festival (June 30)

The Kooks, Blossoms, Don Broco, The Hunna, Kate Nash, Gerry Cinnamon and many more are performing at Community 2019., there’ll also be appearances from indie five-piece Blossoms, Don Broco, The Hunna, The Amazons, Kate Nash and loads more. Fancy seeing some wildlife? London Top Sights has compiled a list of the best London Zoos. More than just menageries, these zoos aim to promote the conservation of the animals they work with, and many of them raise funds for projects which they say can help repopulate species in their natural habitats. From pygmy hippos to Sumatran tigers, there are some beautiful creatures in and around London beyond the pigeons in Trafalgar Square. Whether you’re entertaining kids or looking to learn about nature, you should plan a trip to one of these zoos in and around London, and take a walk on the wild side.

In 2026 ZSL will be 200 years old, marking two centuries of discovery, pioneering, inspiring and delighting through science, conservation and our two Zoos. However, the challenges facing wildlife are increasing: the rate of extinction is accelerating through habitat loss, disease, the illegal wildlife trade, pollution and other human effects. ZSL needs to act now to address these challenges.

They have developed a strategy – ZSL 200 – to help  better tackle the issues facing wildlife today and adapt to those around the corner. It will focus our efforts and operations, with science informing work in the field and using the Zoos as a focus to drive engagement.

The Zoo regularly hold workshops in conjunction with the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) to ensure that our young visitors have the opportunity to learn about our British wildlife, including hedgehogs, stag beetles, harvest mice and bats. Throughout the year we hold fundraising days to support Proyecto Titi, a programme to help cotton-top tamarins in Colombia. they are also involved in raising awareness for the Scottish Wildcat throughout our three centres to help save this species from

Looking to get out of the city for a few hours? Here’s the definitive list of best day trips from London, from London Top Sights Tours! These beautiful little getaways feature spa cities, seaside towns and adventures in the great British countryside

1. Cambridge

There’s something for everyone when it comes to entertainment in Cambridge. A choice of galleries showcases an impressive range of art, from the contemporary to the classic, a buzzing theatre and performance scene presents drama, dance and family shows and you can enjoy all kinds of live music from internationally acclaimed orchestras and ensembles to touring pop stars, pub gigs, the world-famous Folk Festival, ever-popular Beer Festival, family-friendly Big Weekend and magical Secret Garden Party festivals.

Cambridge University

2. Oxford

Oxford is renowned for its stunning architecture and the prestigious University of Oxford. While many of the most spectacular buildings are connected to the university, there is far more to the city than the university campus. Wander its cobbled lanes and immerse yourself in its beauty and history; visit Port Meadow; explore the diverse Cowley Road; and enjoy a few drinks in one of the cities many watering holes.

3. Bath

Bath is a real head-turner – just walking its World Heritage streets can lift your spirits. The photogenic Georgian architecture has a warm, sunny glow, while the sweeping crescents and terraced Circus make your head spin. Its biggest draw, the Roman Baths complex, cleverly makes the most of the city’s ancient foundations, while the words of former resident Jane Austen bring more recent history to life.

Today, Bath remains a centre for wellness, with a modern, multi-level thermal spa that taps into its underground vein of rich mineral waters. Such beautiful surroundings attract creative types and there is a wealth of independent shops, markets and eateries. The surrounding countryside bears quality produce in abundance, so Bath is brimming with semi-rural farm shops, artisanal coffee houses, vegan and vegetarian bistros, contemporary brasseries and gourmet restaurants. In fact, it is one of Britain’s leafiest cities, ringed by wooded hills and split by the River Avon and Kennet & Avon canal.

4. Brighton

Brighton & Hove is one of the most vibrant, colourful and creative cities in Europe.

Compact, unique, fun, lively, historic, young and free-spirited, it’s a great place to visit, live, work & study in.

Under an hour from London, Brighton is located on  England’s south coast, between the stunning South Downs and the English Channel. Often voted the happiest place in the UK, the city offers a fantastic mix of Regency heritage, fabulous shopping, funky arts and music, beachfront cool and year round festivals and events.

5. Margate

Here at the very edge of the Garden of England, three Georgian and Victorian resorts, each with its own distinctive character – Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate – cluster around the bays at the far end of the peninsula. There’s a retro feel to these harbour towns, miles of low chalk cliffs edge the peninsula, sheltering a string of secluded, unspoilt sandy bays. For the ultimate experience, you can cycle or hike on the Viking Coastal Trail, along a stunning shoreline and through tranquil lanes.

6. Winchester

Back inland, Winchester is one of my favorite day trips from London by train. It’s an hour or less by rail from the capital and the station is a quick and easy walk from the heart of the city.

England’s ancient capital is a city steeped in history, offering rich pickings for visitors looking to uncover Britain’s past.

Begin with the short climb up St Giles’ Hill for an overview of the city’s heritage – from the top you can trace the sweep of medieval and Georgian buildings, laid out according to the original Saxon street plan.

7. Birmingham

Birmingham, England

8. Leicester

Visit Leicestershire, a county as famous for its battlefields as its Balti. Trace the footsteps of King Richard III to Bosworth Fields and reconstruct the War of the Roses. In Leicester, you can time travel past Saxon cathedrals and medieval guildhalls to space discoveries and shopping malls. There’s also a sizzling golden mile of curry houses to enjoy, and further afield from the city this obsession with food doesn’t change. The county can boast a vast covered market and makes veiny stilton cheese. Leicestershire thinks with its belly. Leicestershire has more than its fair share of water. You can boat canal staircases, scuba-dive in flooded quarries and fish in local reservoirs.

9. Dover

Known as the ‘Gateway to England’, Dover welcomes millions of visitors from all over the globe every year.

Of course, everyone knows about the beautiful and iconic White Cliffs of Dover, but have you actually taken a breathtaking walk along them? Have you discovered the wealth of history and heritage in Dover? Did you know that Dover has a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ status?

10. Whitstable

The Canterbury area offers you so much to see and do during your stay with a huge variety of attractions and indoor and outdoor activities to suit all tastes and interests.

With so much to do you can stay for longer and take your time to explore our glorious countryside and coast, dig deep into our history and heritage, discover our arts and culture, go shopping, enjoy an outdoor adventure, enjoy some family days out, bask on our beaches or bathe in waters that lap more than 14 miles of coastline.

11. Canterbury

Experience Canterbury’s history and heritage, see our stunning architecture and world famous buildings. Enjoy a day out in Canterbury UK and visit the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral, have a relaxing short break or longer fun-filled family holiday at the seaside in Herne Bay or Whitstable. Canterbury tourism has the perfect blend of city, coast and countryside, ensuring that however varied your interests are you will be spoilt for choice. Come and enjoy our beautiful coastline and countryside and our breathtaking heritage and culture. After all, Canterbury is simply inspirational.

12. Bristol

If ever there was a city with a story to tell, it’s Bristol.  Enveloped in the hills of South West England, it has its own unmistakable identity, grounded in roots from centuries past and carved out since by passionate locals and spirited fans.

A hotbed of artists and activists, walk the streets and become part of a living canvas; cycle from the city to the outskirts and discover our green credentials for yourself.

And that’s just a smattering of what makes this city the best.

13. St Albans

I’ll end with what might just be the easiest day trip from London. St Albans is less than 20 minutes by train from some London stations and is a great choice if you don’t have much time or don’t want to spend too much of it in transit.

There’s always something for you in St Albans. History in every footstep, a pub at every turn, and beautiful places to simply stop and soak up the magical atmosphere. Venture beyond the city limits and you’ll find more delights, from a working watermill to Britain’s newest forest.

London has some of the best attractions, including the best pop-ups! Whether it is weird, wacky, or wonderful, Top Sight tours has compiled a list of the best quick London attractions.

Choose Love X Mile in my Shoes

Located in the Empathy museum, The Empathy Museum is an experiential arts space dedicated to helping us all look at the world through other people’s eyes. Using the power of dialogue and storytelling it explores how to view life from the perspective of other people in order to transform personal relationships, help tackle global challenges and open up the public conversation around empathy.

We tour our first project A Mile in My Shoes both in the UK and internationally, adding to our diverse collection of shoes and stories as we go.

The Jellied Eel
After popping up over the spring, The Jellied Eel is back for summer 2019. Walthamstow locals Paul Jellis and Charlie Westover are returning with the cocktail and croquetas bar inside the Grade-II listed L Manze pie and mash shop in Walthamstow.

Every Friday & Saturday night this Summer, they’re going to dim the lights & pull out the shakers, setting up the space for cocktail-hunting punters – and what a space it is. It’s remained unchanged since it opened almost a century ago (it’s even been Grade II listed), and is still filled with its original Art Deco white tile walls & wooden, all-booth seating. The Jellied Eel will be serving up seasonal cocktails, like a rhubarb negronis, blood orange margs and a sharing size dirty martini and gourmet croquetas.

Misha Nanoo

On-Demand is a method of manufacturing in which goods are only produced when they are required, rather than in large batches. Most fashion companies produce large quantities of inventory, a practice that reduces per-piece production cost but often leaves them saddled with excess product at the end of the season. This extra product is put on sale, marked down repeatedly, and if consumers still won’t buy, it’s dumped in landfills or burned, adding significant pollution to our planet.

Frenchies Bacon

The Market Building, Covent Garden, London WC2E 8RF
The pop-up, on the lower level of Covent Garden Market (just down the road from the restaurant), will serve the cult smoked bacon and maple syrup scones with clotted cream, with the option to takeaway. You’ll also be able to get a veggie goat’s cheese version and there’ll be banoffee scones for dessert. Gregory is also installing a PacMan arcade game, available for guests to play on for the duration of the pop-up, and whoever has the highest score at the end will win a tasting experience for two at Frenchie Covent Garden. Better get practising.

WHISK

Calling all dessert fans! Whisk, the pop-up from Randon Burns and chef Simon Jenkins that serves a three-course dessert-only menu, is back and it’s bigger and better than ever. Taking over the Jones & Sons spot in the Angel Central shopping centre for three months, Whisk will offer a seasonal dessert tasting menu complete with tea/coffee and dessert wine pairings.

After an amuse bouche of soft set strawberry jelly with vanilla yoghurt mousse, you get six dessert options to choose from – dishes include avocado and white chocolate mousse with torched sweetcorn, dark chocolate creme with parsnip ice cream and orange granita, roasted rhubarb with vanilla crumble and deep fried ginger, and celery sorbet with crumbled blue cheese and honeycomb – and petit fours to finish.

Social Fun and Games Club
Social Fun & Games Club is back at Roof East for summer and they’ve got a new look, new games and new street food. Not only are Birdies crazy golf and batting cage Sluggers returning to the roof but House of Foos, a VR mix of football and table foosball, is heading up there too. You’ll also be able stretch it out with Flow East Yoga, catch a movie with Rooftop Film Club, and chow down on street food from the new Roof Eats line-up, which includes Eat Chay, Kolkati and Jimmy Garcia’s The Burger Project.

Las Mexacanas

For Las Mexicanas, the summer edition of their rooftop, Queen of Hoxton is taking inspiration from San Cristobal in Mexico. There’ll be a wrestling ring and arm wrestling stage where you’ll find the luchadoras, the bad ass ladies of Mexican wrestling; events like Trump pinata making, insect and mezcal tasting, and feminist embroidery workshops; and tacos and frozen margs galore. Often mentioned in songs and the current home of London’s top vintage markets, Bethnal Green is a hidden gem one can check out after a Top Sights Tour! Check out our neighborhood guide below.

Situated in the fashionable East London, Bethnal Green is a dynamic inner city hub boasting excellent Overground and Underground links. A 6-minute train takes you into London’s Liverpool Street, but with all Bethnal Green has to offer, you’ll never have a reason to leave.

Whether solo visitors or with family be sure to stop by the V&A museum of childhood.  Home to one of the world’s finest collections of children’s toys, doll’s houses, games and costumes, the Museum of Childhood shines brighter than ever after extensive refurbishment, which has given it an impressive entrance. Part of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the museum has been amassing childhood-related objects since 1872 and continues to do so with ‘Incredibles’ figures complimenting bonkers 1970s puppets, Barbie Dolls and Victorian praxinoscopes. The museum has lots of hand-on stuff for kids dotted about the many cases of historic artefacts. Regular exhibitions are held upstairs, while the café helps to revive flagging grown-ups.

Bag some bargain blooms at Columbia Road Flower Market

Columbia Road flower market and shops are open on Sundays from 8am ’til 3’ish come rain, wind or shine and even on Easter Sunday. Columbia Road is in the East End sitting on the edge of the city with Shoreditch to the west and Brick Lane and Spitalfields nearby. On Sunday the street is transformed into oasis of foliage and flowers. Everything from bedding plants to 10 foot banana trees are up for grabs. The air is intense with the scent of flowers and the chant of the barrow boys “Everthin’ a fiver”? A lot of the flower sellers grow their own plants or import flowers from around the world.

We are one of the few streets in the country composed of sixty independent shops. Small art galleries sit next to cup cake shops, vintage clothes stores, English and Italian delis, garden and antique shops. There is also a wealth of great pubs, cafes and restaurants. The shops have a common thread, a love of the flower market and its history, and a refusal to be dictated to by a retail world where the sense of fun has all but gone.

Have a proper ‘caff’ experience at E Pellicci

While the area around it desperately gentrifies, East End café E Pellicci sticks to the old values of hearty food, warm hospitality, and salty humour. Max Olesker celebrates a London institution. E Pellicci can claim to be the oldest family-run café in London. It was in 1900 that Priamo Pellicci, his wife Elide and their son Dorino left the village of Roggio in Provincia di Lucca, Tuscany, and came to London, where Priamo took a job in a small café. When the owner, a fellow Tuscan, decided to return to Italy, Priamo bought the place. It was named E Pellicci, in honour of Elide, and initially sold cigarettes and sweets as well as food. “Probably just egg and chips back then, though,” says Anna. “We didn’t do none of that foreign rubbish until the Eighties!” Together, Priamo and Elide ran the café and had six more children; Dorino was followed by Peter, Olga, Terry, Joe, Nevio and Meri.

The building was fire-damaged in the 1970s, before being renovated by volunteers for its current use. Further major improvements were completed in 2009.

Test your knowledge at The Star of Bethnal Green’s quiz

What’s the deal? Super Star Quiz is a general knowledge quiz but much louder and with a bit of a glam sheen to it, brought to you by gold-sequinned question-wrangler Nadean Downey. Fun, silly, hard and always packed.
Who do I need on my team? There are points on offer in the music round for dancing, so bear that in mind. Tap up that guy in your office who never speaks since his wife left but gets blasted at the Christmas drinks every year and ends up doing The Worm with his tie around his head.

Go to Repton Boxing Club

Historically speaking, life in East London was one filled with hard times. Money was usually scarce, living spaces were cramped, and the streets were notorious for being rough. Thus, East Londoners were known for being a hardy bunch—people who could not only withstand these conditions, but learn how to thrive as well. This is best shown through the sport of boxing, a rough pastime that has deep roots in the boroughs of East London, where hundreds of world champions have called their home.

Boxing and youth clubs sprung up across the area, serving as a means for young men to discipline themselves, as well as release their aggressions without getting into trouble on the streets. Today, there is perhaps no club that better exemplifies this sentiment than the Repton Boxing Club. Nestled in an old Victorian bathhouse in Bethnal Green, this club has a history of success in both boxing and community outreach, and continues to serve as a reminder to all of East London’s boxing prowess.

Before it held the status of an amateur boxing gym, the Repton Boxing Club was initially founded in 1884 as the Repton Boys Club by the Repton College in Derbyshire. In 1895, Oxford House officially announced its support for the club, and advertised it in the annual report as an alternative club for boys who were ‘of a lower class’ than those the Webbe Institute supported.

Enjoy a French cocktail at Coupette

Chris Moore, formerly of Savoy’s Beaufort Bar, is bringing an air of je ne sais quoi to Bethnal Green’s resident French restaurant bar. The drinks, by head bartender Frank Dedieu, represent the best of the regions of France, with signatures including Apples, with Calvados and carbonated cold-pressed apple juice, Truffled White Negroni; and the Champagne Piña Colada.

French fare includes the standard cheese, tartare and charcuterie with larger dishes like whole roasted lamb shoulder served with wild garlic and baby gem, confit duck leg with orange glazed salsify and chicken liver parfait with crispy skin and seasonal chutney.
